How many times have you tried to get something done and never really actually got to it. I know it has happened to me only on several occasions until I figured out something that most people to don't know how to do. Properly Set A Goal. You see setting a goal takes more that just saying that your going to do something or writing something that you plan to execute, but its more about the strategies and the thought process that is required to make and execute your goals. So below I'm going to give you a list of things that I see to be very important when setting up goals.
Be Focused and Flexible
The plans that you plan to make are not set in stone, therefor you need to believe that as you grow and mature within yourself you going to be changing your views about life, and so will your goals. But just mere thought and act of coming up with an idea, visualizing it in your mind, and acting on it will drive you to take those first important steps.(B.Baker)
Decide specifically what you want
Decide what you ultimately want the outcome to be. Having a vague idea that you one day want to be in the music industry is just not going to kick it, so you need to know exactly in what direction you want to travel. This means to be detailed as possible about your plans and how you choose to execute them.
Visualize what you want, like its already there.
I know you have heard of the old proverb that says; "you must see it before you can be it", this couldn't be more truer. You see before you actually can understand this industry you have to first see what it is in a whole, until then you wont fully understand the intricate parts of this industry. Honestly if it was your true passion this wouldn't be an issue because I'm sure you would have been snooping around long enough to be able to see what your aiming for by now.
Write down your goals
Keeping your thoughts and your goals in your head is a pretty wastful thing to do. The mind process was not ment to be used as a sketchy tool. So when you go back to to get that good idea you thought about ealier last week, guess what, it wont be there. Studies have showed that proffessionals that writed down there ideas tend to have more successfull businesses, why, because its not every moment when you are on a creative rolls and if your nitch is running high in creation then you better grab holf for that moment and ride it on out, you'll be suprised how far you can get. I like to think that thats when God has put you in the direct path of the vision and you instanly gain control for a temporary moment, this is your most creative time this moment, why not document it. http://www.communication-newsletter.com/write.htm
Anticipate the obstacle that might come against you
I just want to touch on this point real quick. Now even though there are going to be hurdles in this journey that coming. But what industry doesnt have hurdles. The thing about it is that you have inginuity which means you have a brain to figure your way out of the hole your in. How? You just get more creative in your kraft, I gaurantee you that if in any situation you are being shut down, doors closed, etc. Its something that your not doing right, you may be focusing too much attention in one area when its needed in the marketing area. All you have to do is go back to the drawing board and be more creative. If you cant do it then mabey its not the job for you.
Identify the people and the resources your going to need
This is important, and Im going to tell you why. The industry is based off of relationships. So that essentially means that you need to know that person who knows that person who is friends the the person that you need to meet. Now isnt that allot. So this means that you need to take advantage of the people that you meet while you are in this industry. Why? Because you never know who your connecting with. Which means that this person who has dances know the brother of the guy you need to get to. It never hurts to ask for favors. I belive that God puts our blessing inside of people and we have to ask to release the blessing. Also build a contact data base using your cell phone is cool but if you want to be a bit more proffesional you could use your computer data software. I like to use excell so I can just build it from there. You can also check out the music business directory, but be carefull because with the way that the industry is most of those contacts are old by time you get them. Or most of the contacts on there will be the main number to the company although there would be an executives name in place. im going to put a link below so that you can check out some of the sites that B.Baker has also recommended in his book "Guerrilla Music Marketing". They do cost money to join so becarful about the legitimacy of the business you are dealing.

Set DeadLines for when you want to have things done.
See people tend to do better with work when they have a deadline or time limit to have things done. So basically if you choose to be more productive then you would see the sence in giving yourself a deadline in having things done. Using this practice with other people will also help you get what you want out of people more effectivley.

What is it that Your missing?
Seems like to me that artist these days are still in the underground scene. I wonder why... no I don't I already know. Most of these artist these days don't understand that the entertainment industry is based totally on relationships. Since that is the case you are going to need some type of representation. Of course this is the reason why Artist need an Artist manager, personal manager, agent or someone who represents the artist professionally in business matters and decisions. If you have notice most labels, A&R reps, or Music Executives accept cold material(meaning music or demos from people they don't know) For this reason they rely on booking agents, entertainment lawyers, big producers, A&R reps to recommend artist to the label. So what does that really tell you. Representation is very important in most cases. It gives you that ability to arm yourself with a professional shield, and that shield is a person who has knowledge to back it up. Now with that being said you must choose your manager or agent very wisely. Make sure that he or she knows what the business is about. Make sure that they know what managing an artist is about. Remember that you are only as good as your manager because they hold the strategies that are needed to be implemented into your career that is going to boost you to that next level. So makes sure that your manager has proven strategies in how he or she plans to handle your career with artist and your stage(whatever that stage may be)
This is for the Artist out there trying to make it
